Tune In for PMHI's September 2026 Webinar

Thursday, September 17th, 2026 • 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM • Irish Time

This 90-minute webinar brings together Orlagh Reid's extensive experience as an IACP accredited psychotherapist with her lived experience as a first time mother of her daughter born with physical and intellectual disabilities. Blending clinical knowledge, current Irish research and personal insight, Orlagh will share how health professionals can sensitivity and compassionately support parents through one of the most significant transitions they may ever experience.

The webinar focuses on 'bridging the perinatal into the postnatal phase', recognising that while pregnancy is often centred on healthy outcomes, there is rarely discussion about the possibility of disability and lifelong conditions. Participants will be invited to consider how these realities might be acknowledged with sensitivity, warmth and compassion and fostering psychological preparedness and a holistic approach to maternal mental mental health.

The session will explore the emotional impact of a newborn diagnosis, the role of therapeutic presence, and how professionals can create safe spaces where mothers, partners and families feel heard, supported and empowered.

Above all, the webinar highlights a simple but powerful message: parents do not need professionals who have all the answers—they need professionals who are willing to walk alongside them with empathy, confidence and hope.

Why This Training Matters

Pregnancy is most often framed around healthy outcomes. Rarely is space made for the possibility of disability, lifelong conditions, or the profound shift in expectations that can follow a newborn diagnosis. For perinatal professionals, this gap matters enormously. Parents navigating this transition need practitioners who are not just clinically equipped but emotionally present — willing to walk alongside them with empathy, confidence, and hope, even without all the answers.

What You'll Learn:

  • How to bridge the perinatal and postnatal phases when a disability diagnosis changes everything

  • The emotional impact of receiving a newborn or infant disability diagnosis on mothers, partners, and families

  • How to acknowledge these realities with sensitivity, warmth, and compassion

  • The role of therapeutic presence in creating genuinely safe spaces for parents

  • How to foster psychological preparedness and a holistic approach to maternal mental health

  • Practical strategies for supporting parents to feel heard, supported, and empowered
