Tune In for PMHI's October 2026 Webinar

Tuesday, October 27th, 2026 • 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM • Irish Time

(Please check your local time, as clocks change in Europe and North America around this date)

The transition to motherhood involves profound neurological, hormonal, and psychological reorganisation — yet identity disruption during matrescence is still too often treated as pathology rather than development. When clients ask "who am I now?", perinatal professionals need more than empathy.

This 90-minute training with Maya McDaniel Bailey, LPC, PMH-C, provides both a research framework and a creative clinical tool for supporting identity reconstruction during one of the most significant transformations of a woman's life.

The first half of the training grounds participants in current scholarship: the developmental science of matrescence, maternal brain changes, adverse childhood experiences in the perinatal period, and emerging research on Black matrescence and intergenerational mother-daughter transmission. The second half is experiential — participants complete The Sun Will Rise and We Will Start Again, a guided visioning workbook adapted from Debbie Millman's ten-year plan exercise, and learn to facilitate it with clients. Trauma-informed adaptations for NICU parents, perinatal loss, and birth trauma are included throughout.

Participants leave with a client-ready workbook, a facilitator's manual, and a practical, evidence-based answer to the question their clients keep asking. Because you can't think your way out of feeling — but you can create your way into healing.

Why This Training Matters

The transition to motherhood involves profound neurological, hormonal, and psychological reorganisation — yet identity disruption during matrescence is still too often treated as pathology rather than development. When clients ask "who am I now?", perinatal professionals need more than empathy. They need a framework. This training provides both the science and a concrete, client-ready tool to support identity reconstruction with confidence, creativity, and care.

What You'll Learn:

  • The developmental science of matrescence and why identity disruption is a normal — not pathological — part of the transition to motherhood

  • How the maternal brain changes during the perinatal period and what this means for clinical support

  • The relationship between adverse childhood experiences and perinatal mental health

  • Emerging research on Black matrescence and intergenerational mother-daughter transmission

  • How to facilitate The Sun Will Rise and We Will Start Again — a guided visioning workbook adapted from Debbie Millman's ten-year plan exercise

  • Trauma-informed adaptations of the workbook for NICU parents, perinatal loss, and birth trauma

  • How to help clients move from identity disruption into intentional identity reconstruction

  • Practical facilitation skills for integrating creative clinical tools into your existing practice

Maya McDaniel Bailey

Maya McDaniel Bailey, MA, LPC, PMH-C, is a Licensed Professional Counselor, PhD candidate in Counselor Education and Supervision, and CEO of H.A.B Collective, a clinician-led collective helping the soul remember what the world made it forget through free community wellness events.

A CE trainer since 2019 and past president of Chapter III of the Alabama Counseling Association, she most recently presented a poster, "Supporting Parents in the NICU: A Narrative Review," at the 2026 Postpartum Support International Conference. She came to perinatal mental health through lived experience: a two-time NICU mom who believed her clinical training would inoculate her. It didn't. What she learned at her babies' bedsides anchors everything she does now — you can't think your way out of feeling, but you can create your way into healing. Her trainings are science, story, and invitation, teaching clinicians to turn their experience into expertise — because the wounded healer heals differently
