WHY THIS TRAINING

Providing Competent, Compassionate Care During Profound Loss

Perinatal loss is among the most psychologically complex experiences a person can face, and it is one that many healthcare professionals encounter regularly yet feel underprepared to navigate.

The clinical picture is rarely straightforward: grief, anger, anxiety, and physical health complications can present simultaneously, and the distinctions between normal bereavement and clinical conditions such as PTSD, complex bereavement disorder, or perinatal mood and anxiety disorders require careful, informed assessment.

This training provides a structured clinical framework for understanding, assessing, and supporting clients through the full spectrum of perinatal loss — from early miscarriage to stillbirth, termination for medical reasons, and diagnoses incompatible with life. The curriculum is grounded in current evidence and designed to translate directly into practice.

Participants will leave with a clearer clinical lens, greater confidence in difficult conversations, and a deeper understanding of the long-term impact of loss on individuals, couples, and subsequent pregnancies, equipped to provide the kind of informed, compassionate support that makes a genuine difference at one of the most vulnerable moments in a person's life.

This Training is Designed For

  • Psychologists and psychotherapists

  • Counsellors working with perinatal clients

  • Midwives and obstetric nurses

  • GPs and medical practitioners

  • Doulas and birth workers

  • Social workers in perinatal settings

  • Any professional supporting individuals through pregnancy and loss

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

What You Will Be Able to Do

By the end of this training, participants will have developed competency across three core clinical domains.

Clinical Assessment

  • Define and differentiate between miscarriage, stillbirth, and related pregnancy complications, including clinical classifications and prevalence

  • Identify evidence-based risk factors for emotional complications, distinguishing them from common misconceptions

  • Perform differential diagnosis between normal bereavement and clinical conditions including PTSD, complex bereavement disorder, and PMADs

  • Assess a client's grief response and determine when referral or escalation of care is warranted

Understanding the Impact

  • Explain the psychological conceptualization of grief in the perinatal context, including typical maternal and paternal responses

  • Describe the physical health complications that can accompany pregnancy loss

  • Analyze the multifaceted impact of loss, including stigma, relationship effects, and implications for subsequent pregnancies and future children

  • Recognize the unique clinical considerations for abortion, termination for medical reasons, selective reduction, and diagnoses incompatible with life

Therapeutic Interventions

  • Identify evidence-based therapeutic approaches to support clients navigating perinatal loss

  • Apply couples counseling strategies specific to the shared experience of loss

  • Use compassionate, clinically appropriate language — including knowing what not to say

  • Connect clients with appropriate support systems and resources to facilitate healing

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior experience in perinatal mental health to attend?

No specific perinatal experience is required. This training is appropriate for professionals at varying stages of their engagement with the perinatal population. A foundational understanding of mental health concepts is helpful, but the curriculum is designed to be accessible while remaining clinically substantive.

How does this training relate to the PMHI Advanced Course?

This training covers grief and loss as a focused, standalone subject. The PMHI Advanced Perinatal Mental Health Specialist Training is a 10-month, 30-CPD program that covers the full scope of the perinatal period in depth. The two are complementary but independent — attending this training is not a prerequisite for the Advanced Course, and the Advanced Course covers grief and loss as one of many modules within a broader specialist curriculum.

Will I receive CPD/CE credits?

Yes. PMHI is approved by the CPD Standards Office to provide 4 internationally recognised Continuing Education credits for this course. All participants who attend live receive a certificate of completion for their professional development records. Live attendance is required for the certificate of completion.

What is the format of the training?

The training is delivered live and virtually via Zoom. It runs for 4 hours including a 15-minute break, and incorporates direct instruction, case study discussion, small group work, and a brief experiential component (RAIN visualization). The small group format (maximum 20 participants) ensures meaningful discussion and engagement.

Will the training be recorded?

Yes. All sessions are recorded, and participants will have access to the recording for three months following the live training date. However, please note that the CPD certificate of completion is issued to participants who attend the live session only. If you are attending primarily for CPD purposes, we recommend registering for a date you are able to attend in full.

What if I have questions before enrolling?
