WHY THIS TRAINING
Perinatal loss is among the most psychologically complex experiences a person can face, and it is one that many healthcare professionals encounter regularly yet feel underprepared to navigate.
The clinical picture is rarely straightforward: grief, anger, anxiety, and physical health complications can present simultaneously, and the distinctions between normal bereavement and clinical conditions such as PTSD, complex bereavement disorder, or perinatal mood and anxiety disorders require careful, informed assessment.
This training provides a structured clinical framework for understanding, assessing, and supporting clients through the full spectrum of perinatal loss — from early miscarriage to stillbirth, termination for medical reasons, and diagnoses incompatible with life. The curriculum is grounded in current evidence and designed to translate directly into practice.
Participants will leave with a clearer clinical lens, greater confidence in difficult conversations, and a deeper understanding of the long-term impact of loss on individuals, couples, and subsequent pregnancies, equipped to provide the kind of informed, compassionate support that makes a genuine difference at one of the most vulnerable moments in a person's life.

No specific perinatal experience is required. This training is appropriate for professionals at varying stages of their engagement with the perinatal population. A foundational understanding of mental health concepts is helpful, but the curriculum is designed to be accessible while remaining clinically substantive.
This training covers grief and loss as a focused, standalone subject. The PMHI Advanced Perinatal Mental Health Specialist Training is a 10-month, 30-CPD program that covers the full scope of the perinatal period in depth. The two are complementary but independent — attending this training is not a prerequisite for the Advanced Course, and the Advanced Course covers grief and loss as one of many modules within a broader specialist curriculum.
Yes. PMHI is approved by the CPD Standards Office to provide 4 internationally recognised Continuing Education credits for this course. All participants who attend live receive a certificate of completion for their professional development records. Live attendance is required for the certificate of completion.
The training is delivered live and virtually via Zoom. It runs for 4 hours including a 15-minute break, and incorporates direct instruction, case study discussion, small group work, and a brief experiential component (RAIN visualization). The small group format (maximum 20 participants) ensures meaningful discussion and engagement.
Yes. All sessions are recorded, and participants will have access to the recording for three months following the live training date.
