WHY THIS TRAINING
The transition to parenthood — matrescence and patrescence — represents one of the most profound developmental and identity shifts a couple will experience. Yet, the relational impact of this transition is often under-addressed in standard perinatal care.
From the complex psychological toll of fertility challenges to the practical realities of sleep deprivation, shifting sexual dynamics, and the unequal distribution of the mental load, couples face significant vulnerabilities during this period. When Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) are present, these relational challenges are further compounded.
This training provides a structured clinical framework for understanding, assessing, and supporting couples through the perinatal continuum. The curriculum moves from the impact of fertility treatments through to postnatal planning, equipping professionals with specific, actionable interventions.
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to assess relationship functioning, navigate differing expectations, and facilitate the development of a new relationship contract, enabling them to provide confident, couples-based perinatal care.

No specific perinatal experience is required. This training is appropriate for professionals at varying stages of their engagement with the perinatal population. A foundational understanding of mental health concepts is helpful, but the curriculum is designed to be accessible while remaining clinically substantive.
This training covers the transition from partners to parents as a focused, standalone subject. The PMHI Advanced Perinatal Mental Health Specialist Training is a 10-month, 30-CPD program that covers the full scope of the perinatal period in depth. The two are complementary but independent — attending this training is not a prerequisite for the Advanced Course, and the Advanced Course covers perinatal couple relationships as one of many modules within a broader specialist curriculum.
Yes. PMHI is approved by the CPD Standards Office to provide 4 internationally recognised Continuing Education credits for this course. All participants who attend live receive a certificate of completion for their professional development records. Live attendance is required for the certificate of completion.
The training is delivered live and virtually via Zoom. It runs for 4 hours including a 15-minute break, and incorporates direct instruction, case study discussion, and small group work. The small group format (maximum 20 participants) ensures meaningful discussion and engagement.
Yes. All sessions are recorded, and participants will have access to the recording for three months following the live training date.
